The Beginning of an End - Chapter 1

2 years. I sighed. I stare at the clock as the time ticks. 7.15pm. As the large needle hits the 3, I felt the scissors of the stylist snip of my 7 inch hair. I felt a heavy weight falling off my chest. After 20 years of having long hair, I chopped it off, I thought to myself what an achievement it felt. As the stylist snipped away, flashes of the past appeared and disappeared as fast as the hair dropping to the ground. The first time we met, the first time we kissed, the places we visited, the times we spent. It’s over. Goodbye... Ian.
--------------------------------------
Two months down the road and I have woke up from the puppy love that we had for 2 years. What a waste, I scoffed, thinking about it all. It annoyed me to know that he still messages me and comments on my Facebook posts like a saint. “You expect me to be friends with you?” I spat at my phone.

“Why are you talking to your phone?” my mother asked.

“No, I wasn’t,” I muttered and stuck my tongue out.

Going to my thoughts, I typed furiously on my phone. Tweeting all my anger. Okay, maybe I was never fully over it, I said to myself. Maybe I just need to get myself to meet someone new. I mean, why still be hung over a by that I dated when I was in college, had 3 abortions with and never celebrated a birthday with, right?

I shook my head and stalked into my room. I lit a cigarette and sighed. What am I thinking? I know he was going after his ex anyways. I don’t know how not to be pissed off by that but it was my own fault to be hopeful on someone like that I suppose.

“What’s your birthday plans tomorrow?” you texted Mandy, to avoid yourself from thinking.

“I’m going to cut hair first at the mall then going poker with the boys,” she replied.

“Ah, I’ll come join you for dinner before you meet up with your boys,” you replied.

“Alright, just give me a call,” she texted back.

Taking a last puff of my cigarette, I put it out in the ashtray and switched the lights off.
-------------------------------------------
The next day went by in a flash. I headed off to work, a new job. Spent my time researching and watching videos. After work, I went off to meet Mandy.

“Finally, I get to trim this beast,” she said, referring to her hair. She had a half- shaved and long fringed hair cut.

“I’m guessing this is the money from poker winnings the other day with your boys?” I asked.

“Yup! I have another session later. Wanna join?” she quipped.

“Uh, no. I’m thinking of going home early. It’s my mom’s birthday too. Maybe tomorrow?” I said as I played with my phone.

As she got her hair cut, we gossiped over our friends and artists gossip. I mean, who wouldn’t want to talk about Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez right? *rolls eyes*
-------------------------------------------
After her haircut, we headed to a restaurant for dinner with our friends. When Mandy headed off with Jacky to meet the boys, I was left with Rebecca and James.

“Where shall we go?” I asked.

“I have no idea but we don’t want to head back early. I’m spending as much time as I can with James before he heads off to Germany,” Rebecca nibbled James’ hand.

“Let’s surprise Mandy then,” I quickly changed the subject before I get sick.

“Sounds good!” the couple quipped.
--------------------------------------------
Getting a cake, we headed to where Mandy and the boys were having their poker session. Jacky brought us up to the room and we could hear the Mah-jong tiles being rubbed around the table. This is what happens when Asians do not have any cards.
“Surprised!” I poked my head in.

“No, no, no! No you did not! You guys suck!” Mandy exclaimed as Rebecca and James came in with the cake.

The boys sang her a song and then continued with their last game. Watching Mandy’s tiles, I never noticed the other boys around. There was Ken, the crazy jolly one, Kevin, the sane one, and Jin, the one that I remembered as the bad calculator.

As I head off with Rebecca and James, I turned back to look at the boys and felt like there was something I’m not noticing. I shrugged it off and dozed off in the car.
